Christmas Pets

Very often it is said that Christmas is a bad time to get a pet or to give a pet to someone else. There is a reason behind this very statement, that is almost every animal welfare organisations always have to deal with an enormous increase in the number of abandoned pets in the New Year or any special occassions. It seems that people get these pets without really wanting them or even prepared for the effort that caring for the pet involves. These people who bought these pets do not know and fully understand that pets are life-time commitment!

Indeed, it is very true that some of us might be tempted to be rather thoughtless and quite impulse during the Christmas seasons, however, we must not forget that pet ownership needs a good deal of thought and effort. If you want a pet you must be prepared for the responsibilities that go with it for the entire lifetime of the animal. Pets are not able to look after themselves and definitely are not commercial items to be cast aside when interest wanes. Pets are like our own children. We do not abandon our children.

Always consult your family members before owning any pets. It does not just take one person in the family to care for the pet, but it involves the whole family. If you have any family members objecting to owning a pet, you will not only have a hard time caring for the pet, but also maintaing and keeping the pet for as long as you want!

Do consider giving a home to a stray dog or cat or any homeless pets, if you do decide on a pet. ‘Pounds’ and Animal Rescue societies have lots of excellent pets looking for homes. You can also help these abandoned pets in other ways by giving or finding them a responsible home. These pets are just as wonderful and friendly. Some of the pounds are commercial ventures supported by local authorities. While, rescue societies are usually run by volunteers and are often in need of financial and other support. This would be a great time to help them look after the strays by sending some donations, pet food or even just showering these strays with hugs. You might even be able to organise a fund raising event to support your local society.

Of course, don't forget your own pet at Christmas.

Be certain that your pets is comfortable, well fed and groomed. Some pets with very long hair are hard to manage in wet, muddy conditions. A lot of the grooming may be minor tidy ups and can be done at home, however do make your bookings early if you want a professional groomer. Groomers get very busy just before Christmas and may not be able to cope with your pet if you leave it too late. Pets do get groomed up for occassions too!

One particularly important aspect of pets ownership is the prevention of unnecessary breeding. Sadly, many unwanted pets may never find good homes and many have to be ‘put-down’ by vets every year. Female dogs and cats do make very good pets however owners should use some form of breeding control for these pets. Unnecessary breeding can be prevented with regular injections or tablets but the most popular control is surgical neutering. The operations can safely be carried out by vets before dogs and cats are sexually mature and the surgery last for the life of the pet.

Remember, pets are life-time commitment. Do not be impulse getting them. Think and discuss it through with family. Help save a stray. Pets aren't for presents.
