Summer is here and so are the fleas. If you have pets, they are targeted by the fleas. Dogs, cats, rats, rabbits, mice, and chickens are just some of the pets that are hosts to fleas. Fleas also feast on squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons, opossums, foxes, and even humans. There are four stages of a flea's life cycle.
Some fleas carry diseases such as plague, Murine Typhus, tapeworms, and Flea Allergy Dermatitis. Plague isn't very common but does still exist in parts of the western and southwestern United States. Flea bites can cause illness and even death to both humans and their pets.
In the article Fleas, the oriental rat flea is named as the most important carrier of plague to humans, but thirty other flea species are potential carriers of this disease. Among these carriers are the dog, cat, northern rat, and human flea. For more in-depth information on this subject access the article, Fleas. If fleas have already moved in with Rover or Fluffy, there are strategic counter attacks that pet owners may launch to defend their home against these pests. According to the article, Ridding Your Home of Fleas, by Mike Potter, Extention Entomologist, University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, "For successful flea control, the home, pet, and oftentimes, the yard must be treated." Potter continues by explaining the life cycle of the flea and how it determines treatment.
According to the article Fleas by Mark E. Ascerno and Jeffrey D. Hahn, it is important that all cats and dogs in the home are treated simultaneously to avoid possible reinfestation. Ascerno and Hahn continue by indicating that applications should be at the base of the tail and the body between the two rear legs, where more fleas tend to congregate. The authors stress careful reading of all insecticide labels and careful following of directions.
Fleas are not fun for both humans and pets. Fleas are dangerous, especially when they carry disease. For your health and your pets, find a way to keep the fleas away from your home and pet as much as possible.
