Border Fancy
Canary are songbirds from the Canary Islands, taken to Europe by Portuguese
and Spanish sailors in the 16th century. Border Canaries were bred in the Scottish
borders. Plump and round-bodied, they come in many colors including variegated.
They are kept in an aviary, or an indoor cage at least 24 by 18 by 12 inches. An all-wired cage is suitable. Cover the base with paper and sand and provide natural wood perches, fixed at least 4 inches from the sides of the cage.
Feed a good quality canary mix containing small seeds such as canary seed, hemp, millet, linseed, poppy, and lettuce. Provide fresh green food such as spinach and parsley, apple and grated carrot. Provide a cuttlefish bone, grit and fresh water.
Their breeding season lasts from April to May. Fix a cup-like nest pan, which
is made of plastic, wood, wire or basketware, to the back of the cage and line
it with a non-fibrous pad. Provide the birds with nest building materials such
as dry moss, dried grass and soft hay.
