Avoid sand sheets, which can cause sore feet and may be chewed. Provide a cage that is long rather than tall, at least 30 by 18 by 18 inches. Line with paper and sprinkle with grit. Give a bath every few days, in the sink or an enclosed bath that fits to the cage door.
Feed with commercially produced food -- a mixture of various types of millet seed, canary seed, hemp and oats, with added vitamins and minerals. Provide fresh water at all times in a small water bottle or dispenser. Budgies love to peck millet sprays.
Budgerigars live for about 7 years. Birds that are kept singly are the best
talkers but, as wild budgerigars are such social animals; pet birds should really
be kept as a pair. They will preen each other for hours every day, chatter,
play and feed together.
