Pekin Robin is a small
thrush-like babbler that ranger from the Himalayas to southern China. The male
has such an attractive, flute-like song that he is also call a Pekin Nightingale.
They are active and inquisitive birds and are also easily tamed.
They are kept in a well-planted aviary. Insulated shelters are needed for winter use. They bathe several times a day; a plant-pot saucer, filled with water and set into the ground, makes a cheap and very effective birdbath. Replace the water daily.
They eat a wide variety of food such as fruits, softbill food, millet and canary seed, soaked millet sprays, green foods, such as vegetables and peas, live insects. If they are kept with other birds, they may steal their eggs and chicks. They can be tamed to eat mealworms from the hand.
Robins live for 10 years. A cup-shaped nest of twigs, grass and moss is built
in a bush or a nest box or basket, especially if it is placed behind a shrub
or potted plants. About 3 to 4 eggs are incubated for 14 days; chicks leave
the nest after 2 weeks. Provide the parents live insect food.
