The unicorn runs wild in an open field of poppies Swift, sure of himself, afraid of nothing The sun shines, filling the fields with bright busts of flame That contrast sharply with the white of his body He, with long flowing mane, tail arched with pride His nostrils flared wide as he smells the clean air He prances, darts, playfully chasing butterflies A truck shatters the silence and the unicorn stands still A statue, eying the dirt road cautiously An old truck, it rattles, as though the next jolt Will cause its delicate frame to crumble Then a boy sticks his arm out, "Look Daddy, a horse!" His voice dies away as the truck ambles out of sight And the unicorn stands there, head up, for a long while An old white horse ambles head down in a dying field His coat, yellow with age, blends drably with the muddy field His mane and tail lay matted, drooping He is no longer proud, and his feet are heavy As he plods aimlessy around, the broken fences Remind him that he is no longer a unicorn
