I have a parakeet and just got a cockatiel. They both seem lonely and I was wondering if it would be safe to let them out of their cages at the same time, or even let them spend some time together in the large cage. I just do not want them to hurt each other? You could also email any advice to angelfire1966@msn.com

Sure, I've had parakeets and cockatiels sharing the same cages for years. But be sure to introduce them slowly and it's best you do it with a new cage so one doesn't act "territorial" about the cage. They may not become the best of buddies but they certainly can become tolerant cagemates if this is done carefully and patiently.

Thank you so much az3672 I have their cages right next to each other and they seem to really like one another. I think that I will wait until the cockatiel knows me a little better before trying them together. This is the first cockatiel I have owned and I love him so. At least I think it is a he, I do not even know that, hehe. He talks to the parakeet so much. I never knew how smart they where, or that they could live so long. I look forward to years of enjoying my new feathered family member. Thanks

Just thought I would let anyone who was interested in knowing that the parakeet and the cockatiel did great together....since than a child who was visiting our home let the parakeet out. We have not seen her since then. A lady who decided that her children had too many pets provided me with not one but 4 parakeets. They are housed in two cages. I now have all three bird cages on the top of a tall shelf. The cockatiel loves having so many friends and durring the day I just leave all three cages open so they can visit. The parakeets have their wings clipped but the cockatiel does not. They all seem very happy with the set up and spend the days playing with each other. I love my birds, they fill our home with their beautiful songs.

It's ok to let them out together! Just supervise them for a while until they are used to each other.
My parakeet and cockatiel are best friends but I keep them in separate cages because parakeets are so high energy and cockatiels are easy going. Plus my parakeet occasionally plucks a feather or two from my cockatiel. (naughty!!!)
Hope your birds are best buds soon! :)
