Weightloss and worms

Gerbils do gain and lose weight off and on in their lifetime.

If your gerbil is abnormally thin, yet still has an appetite, it may have worms. Take a stool sample to a veterinarian to make sure. Then ask for medication if the gerbil does have worms.

You will have to treat all of the gerbils since it can be passed from one to another. If your gerbil does not have worms and is still losing a lot of weight, it may have a tumor.

Feel for unusual bumps or look for discolored areas that may have recently formed.

Take your gerbil to a vet if you suspect a tumor. If it cannot be easily removed, it may have to be put to sleep to avoid any serious pain the gerbil may have.

Gerbils can still live normal lives if a leg is amputated, just be sure all food and water are within easy reach.
