Cavies, widely known as Guinea Pigs, have made their way into our homes with their placid nature. They are the most gentle and sociable among all rodent pets, but nevertheless, a hardy one.
Cavies have an average lifespan of 6 years. However, some healthy ones can live up to eight years of age. They almost never bite or scratch, and are good with children when kids learn how to handle them correctly. Children must be taught the correct way to hold a guinea pig and avoid dropping the animal as it could hurt it. Hold it firmly but gently at the body over the shoulders with one hand and support the body with another hand placed below it. When mishandled, the animal will give a pig-like squeal, and can injured itself when it gets into a panic and starts running about.
Cavies are not natural-born marathoners, and they don't dart like hamsters or gerbils do. Movements is moderate and climbing is minimal. Being inquisitive creatures, cavies like to check out unknown places and could fall and get injured. Supervised playing is the best safe guard.
Cavies live together well with rabbits, but sometimes can be bullied by its bigger neighbor. So the ideal is to keep a small female rabbit with the cavies. When keeping two male cavies together, bear in mind that they might occasionally fight.
Guinea pigs need a commercial diet designed specifically for guinea pigs. Guinea pigs are unable to make vitamin C; therefore, Vitamin C must be supplied through food or supplements. Most guinea pig foods contain a Vitamin C supplement. Timothy hay, alfalfa cubes and/or vegetables and fruits can be offered in small quantities.
A Note About Water
Many small animals can survive without water for long periods of time, however, they will not be as healthy and their life span will be shortened. They will be thinner, their coats will not be as healthy, and they will be much more aggressive without water. Although you may give your pet vegetables and fruits as part of its diet, they are not a replacement for providing fresh clean water every day. Always provide your pet with fresh water.
