The basis of a hamster's diet should be a commercial feed - be it a pelleted ration or a seed mix. The pelleted ration is completely balanced and the hamster cannot just pick out its favorite items, but is monotonous and some hamsters will refuse it.
Commercial hamster mixes are usually accepted better and are a good base for the diet, but care should be taken to avoid those that are all seed - there should be a variety of items including dried vegetables. This should also be supplemented with fresh foods such as fresh vegetables and fruits, as well as the occasional meal worm or cricket and hay for roughage.
Some will also take yogurt and/or small pieces of cooked chicken. Avoid raw beans, potato eyes, green potato, tomatoes, garlic, chocolate, or any sugary or salty foods.
