Natural Habitat
Terrapins live in brackish water (such as at river mouths). Those sold as pets
originate from United States of America.
Size
Depending on the species, the carapace can grow up to 17 - 25 cm long (measures
from the front edge of the carapace to the back).
How to select one
When buying a terrapin, look for signs of activity (eating well and alert to
sudden movement). The head and legs must be firm and free from any injury and
body growths; the eyes must be bright and clear; the carapace must be firm with
no slit or softness.
How to keep them
Terrapins live best in an aquarium placed near a window - they need plenty of
sunlight. Because they are semi-aquatic, they need about 8 cm of water to swim
in and also a dry area on which they can climb up to bask in the sun.
Setting up the aquarium
Dry Area : Use sloping rocks and driftwood. The landing place should be slightly
rough so that the terrapins can climb up without sliding down.
Clean Water : Remember to clean the aquarium and change the water regularly.
Do not line the bottom with sand or pebbles. As the water fouls easily, it is
best to leave the bottom empty for easy cleaning. Filters do not work well here
because the water is not deep enough.
Feeding
Terrapins are mainly carnivorous. Suitable food includes tubifex worms, bits
of fish, prawns and scraps of meat. They also love vegetables like kangkong,
watercress, lettuce, etc.
Feeding should be done on alternate days. Place them in a separate basin and feed them as much as they can eat in half an hour - this prevents fouling of the aquarium water.
